I made this for a challenge in the group Art Quilts Around the World. The challenge was ‘I believe.’ I saw the country falling apart before my eyes and have felt compelled to do my part in bringing it back together. I needed as therapy for myself to find a way to express my sorrow. You can see the process on my blog, but I created a representation of our Fractured States using an old map from an atlas and some crackle paste. I colored it with alcohol inks using a topographical map as inspiration. This symbolized taking the country back to its basic state. I added a broken heart in the process of stitching together. This is what I feel we need to do, find a way to come together and mend our country. Finally I added a saying by Desmond Tutu reminding us to each do our small part where we are, with what we have, because together we can create big changes. I have since been using the image of this quilt as a postcard when I do my small part to encourage our Congressman and Representatives to work together and make the best choices for all of America and not just the top 1% and/or corporate sponsors.
