The current President has given me a new appreciation of previous officeholders who were not my favorites, including Nixon and Bush Jr. I bet even they wouldn’t (in Nixon’s case) or don’t (in Bush’s) admire the chaos of this presidency. I also think that George Washington would object to Trump’s royal aspirations. So I gave the former presidents tiny crocheted pussyhats and hearts, to signify their potential silent protest and my newfound almost-affection for them.
In the upper left corner, there’s a vintage United Airlines badge. I put it there when I made this quilt, in February, long before the airline dragged a customer off the plane – it was supposed to be a comment on how we need to unite. Now it seems sinister:
Here’s the man who would be king. His plastic trumpet was cut from a chain of Mardi Gras beads.
The quilt needed representation from persistent, united women, so here’s a woman I cut from a Terrie Mangat fabric
(with Teddy Roosevelt peering in).
This quilt was made as a part of my “hashtag” series, blogged at http://gefiltequilt.blogspot.com/2017/03/4-improvisational-hashtag-quilt-blocks.html. The steps required to make the hashtag background for a quilt about whatever-your-politics-may-be are explained in that tutorial.
